Chinese Look-Alike

Chinese GirlEver since I live here, people always mistaken me as a Philippines or the most frequent one, as Chinese, they never thought me as an Indonesian. I never had concern being considered as Chinese – as most Chinese has beautiful skin, so I don’t mind :P -, and I have often experienced this even when I was living in Indonesia, but I never been questioned in Chinese before. So this is my first exposure.

The first time was when I was in a Supermarket, a Chinese man was holding a cereal bag and asked me question in Chinese, I stared at him blankly and replied, “Sorry, I can’t speak Chinese”, then I ran. The second one was when I was queuing for a LRT ticket then this girl who’s confronting a broken LRT ticket machine asked me question in Chinese, then I did it again, I stared at her blankly and replied “Sorry, I can’t speak Chinese”, the third one was in quite similar situation. I wonder if they understood me speaking English, why didn’t they change their question to English, so that I can reply them decently and be more helpful :D . The fourth one was a bit different. A guy, who was cleaning an aquarium in my office, spoke to me in Chinese, and when I told him I couldn’t speak Chinese, he said “Kamu punya muka seperti orang Cina”, then he laughed. People always stared at me with the look “How come you can not speak Chinese, when you look like a Chinese girl?” :D Hahahahahha I’m getting used to it. The last one was last night on my way back from the airport, the taxi driver was quite sure that I am a Chinese girl, because of my look, skin and hair. And he too, like everyone else, didn’t think of me as Indonesian.

Those experience encourage me to learn how to speak Chinese – speaking Chinese is hard enough, let alone writing in Chinese :P -, so during my first months in here, I was researching for a Chinese course with reasonable price. Only after this week, after I have a task which is involved reading Chinese character from an UTF-8 properties file, to be displayed as Chinese character, I gave up, Chinese language – even the simplified ones – are very hard to understand. Its character was incredibly peculiar for my stupid mind to understand :D huehuehuehuee

However, I learn some sentence; one of those is “Pu che tau”, which means “I don’t know” in English. So next time someone ask me in Chinese, I can give them a decent reply. Although what I am afraid of, their response will be worse than just a stare with confuse look “How come you can not speak Chinese, when you look like a Chinese girl?”, they will reply my answer in Chinese, because I spoke to them in Chinese. And when that happens, I can not just stared at them blankly and run.
