Break-Fasting at Fish & Co

I had a break-fasting appointment with friends from grad study yesterday, we initially wanted to go dining at Urban Kitchen but since they were full so we moved to Fish & Co. It was my first time dining at Fish & Co. The interior of this place is quite standard; they provide several tables with sofas and standard table for four persons. There are no ornaments such as fish, fishing nets or anything alike, even though they offer mostly sea food.

Since it was my first time and I didn’t know what to expect, I was quite surprised with the price of the food. The food price mostly above 50K, only the snacks and appetizers price starts from 35K. I ordered a seafood platter for one and shared it with a friend, while other friends ordered New York Fish & Chips, Philadelphia Fish & Chips and Spaghetti. The NY Fish & Chips and Sea Food Platter are amongst their recommended menu.

Since the food is quite pricey, I expected a delicious meal and waited with watery mouth. When the food came, the look of it was delicious. The seafood platter consists of fried prawn with mayo, rice, French fries, fried fish and squid. To my disappointment, the food served cold, there’s no sign that the food is freshly fried – well except the French fries. The food taste as if it needs more ingredients. I don’t know what they do with the rice, it has orange-ish color, all I can refer to it is nasi briyani :P except it doesn’t taste like one. The squid is also plain and as a prawn lover, I was disappointed to know the prawn taste so-so. But I do like the fish though. The fish was fried and wrapped with cooking flour (I assumed), it taste good, fresh and doesn’t produce any fishy odor. I can’t help myself but comparing the seafood platter with the one I had in Manhattan Fish Market. I must say I prefer the one in Manhattan Fish Market.

I remember hearing my friend said that the spaghetti was tasteless, again it taste as if it needs more ingredients. Thus they provide us with lots of mayo and chilly on a plate. My fried who ordered Philadelphia and NY Fish & Chips didn’t complaint. I’m not sure whether the enjoyed the food or just feel obligated to finish the food because of the price :D hahahaa

The total bill was 520K (after discounted 30% because we use Mandiri CC), so 85K per person. The drinks were bottomless. For me, it’s too pricey for a so-so dining experience. I don’t think I’m coming back, and I’m having a difficulty to recommend it to others too.

The seafood platter: 139K
New York Fish & Chips: 65K (I don’t remember exactly)
Other food: > 50K

The Traveler: Living and loving is time well spent

The Traveler: Cover

Once there was a boy named Charlie, who had a nice life – but it wasn’t quite perfect. He had to spend too much of his time doing things he didn’t want to do. So one day he packed up all his time in a suitcase, locked it up, and set off to find a better way to spend it. Charlie traveled the world looking for the perfect thing to make him happy. In the meantime, unbeknownst to him, his itsy-bitsy seconds and silky, smooth hours and raggedy days ticked away, so that when Charlie stopped traveling and realized what he truly wanted out of life, it was almost too late. Almost.

I believe there are two types of book in this world, type one is the one that I will read and forget; whilst another one is the type of book that I read and will stick forever in my mind. This book falls into the second type.

I was exposed to this book at Borders bookstore on my visit to KL when I was searching for a book in the Self Improvement/Self-Help section. This book presents itself to me as the cover of the book accidentally caught my sight. At first I was only fast-read the book and put it back to the shelf and ended up buying another book. But I couldn’t get myself to forget about the story and how the message of the story has really stick in my mind. I search for this book in Times Bookstore, which fall under the graphic novel section, and didn’t find it. Finally, I could bring this book home after searching for it under the Underground comic section on Kinokuniya bookstore.

The Traveler: Packing up Time

Later when I look back to my journey in finding this book; to the self improvement, graphic novel then underground comic; I realize that this falls into every-described category. This book will tell you a story about life in Charlie’s point of view. After all, Charlie is like any ordinary human who always seem to seek for happiness in life and never get satisfied of whatever life gave him. Completed by beautiful illustration, you will feel like a child again being taught by a master of life, well about life. And in the end, you will realize that the best way to spend your time is by living and loving. Try to live in the here and now. Dreams are grand, but a life spent chasing can end up a life wasted.

This thin book is written by Daren Simkin, which consists of only 48 pages. But the message inside this book worth a lot more than the physical of the book. The way Daren pass through his message is by writing a very simple story and completed by beautiful illustration. The illustration is made by Daniel Simkin, brother of Daren and it’s beautifully entwined the story and illustration together into a subtle message of wisdom about life

I love this book so much that I would really love to buy several copies of the book and send it to those who were lost like I was once. But then again, I only get one copy and I could only suggest others to go find it and read it. You’ll never regret it! :)

Pempek Megaria

7-29-2010 8-30-37 PM_0035

Buntut Fried Rice @ Seven Cafe

If you happen to be visiting UI Salemba complex and doesn’t have any idea on where to have a decent meal, well I might have one place to recommend. The Seven Café is located at the LPEM FEUI building, inside the UI Salemba complex. There’s a little chance you might miss this place, since it has a bright blue-green neon sign in front of the café. The interior of the café is quite nice and clean, dominated with yellow, blue and orange color. This café has a capacity of around 48 persons with six 4-person regular table and six half sofa half regular chairs suitable for 4 persons that’s very comfortable.

Yamin Noodle with Meatballs @ Seven Cafe

One meal that I would surely recommend is the Nasi Goreng Buntut. Oh the fried rice is so tasty and the fried “buntut” is so juicy and very easy to chew. I tried several dishes during my 2 years of studying but I must say that the Nasi Goreng Buntut is the best of them all. The Yamin Noodle with meatball is also great, whilst Oriental Fried Rice taste just average. One meal that I wouldn’t recommend is their Soto Mie, although the meat taste so good but I’d prefer the “abang-abang” version of Soto Mie. They serve Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean food such as Nasi Goreng, Mie Mamak, Hainan Chicken Rice, etc. They also serve light meal such as toasted bread, roti cane and teh tarik. I think their variety of menu is influenced by Malaysian/Singaporean food.

The price of the meal is quite pricey for a “campus” café though, the nasi goreng buntut cost about 23K, mie yamin costs 16K, oriental fried rice costs about 23K. Too bad I completely forgotten how much the soto mie cost me. But then again, it’s a “café” and not just any campus cafeteria. The ambient of the place is casual, clean, relax and air-conditioned. In day time, you’ll meet FKUI students having their lunch here. But above all, I would recommend anyone to try the Nasi Goreng Buntut!

Yoshinoya: the Japanese Beef Bowl

Original Beef Bowl @ Yoshinoya

I finally had the opportunity to taste this Japanese beef bowl that everyone’s been talking about. Reopened its Jakarta’s branch on July 2010, Yoshinoya made a famous comeback and has made curious customers queue for around 15 minutes just to get a bowl (or more) of their famous beef bowl. Yoshinoya’s outlet is located in Grand Indonesia Entertainment District, floor 3A.

Chicken Teriyaki Bowl @ Yoshinoya Side Dishes of Paket Puas @ Yoshinoya

Although famous for its beef bowl, I decided to try the chicken teriyaki. Since I’m very keen on sweet sauce rather than salty beef bowl. I ordered one Original Beef Bowl “Paket Puas” and Teriyaki Chicken Rice Bowl. The “Paket Puas” consists of one regular portion of beef bowl, one piece of tempura, fried onion and another fried side dish and miso soup. The teriyaki chicken rice comes with miso soup too. Every bowls has two sizes, regular and large.

What I love the most about their beef/chicken bowl is that they serve real vegetables with it, it’s like they really “mean it”. The vegetables are fresh and well served, they surely try to keep their promise of serving “Healthy Beef Bowl”. The portion of their beef bowls are quite big, I didn’t finish the rice. I see several customers share their large portion of beef bowl for 2 persons, great idea so that they don’t waste the food. The taste of the food is good, really worth the money spent.

The price of the rice bowls are very reasonable, the teriyaki chicken rice in regular cost about 19K before tax and the “Paket Puas” costs about 30K. The ambience of the restaurant is also good, the place is quite spacious to cater all the customers. I would surely come back to Yoshinoya again :)
